The situations and pressures that cause stress are called stressors. We usually think of stressors as something negative, like an exhausting work schedule or a difficult relationship. However, something that demands a lot from you and forces you to adjust can be stressful. This includes positive events such as getting married, buying a house, college, or receive a promotion.
What causes stress depends, at least in part on their perception of it. Something that's stressful for you not to disturb anyone else, but may even enjoy it can also cause stress. For example, traffic in the morning can make you anxious and tense as they fear that traffic is going to be late. Others, however, may find the trip relaxing because they allow more than enough time and enjoy the music while driving.
How can you know if you have the symptoms of stress? People who are experiencing stress overload may notice some of the following signs: anxiety or panic attacks, a feeling of being constantly pressured, harassed, and hurried, irritability and moodiness, physical symptoms such as stomach problems, headaches, or chest pain, allergic reactions such as eczema or asthma, trouble sleeping, drinking too much, overeating, smoking or taking drugs and sadness or depression.
Everyone experiences stress differently. Some people become angry and act as stress or take it with others. Some people have internalized and develop eating disorders or substance abuse.
How can you then relieve your symptoms of stress?
The most useful method of dealing with stress is learning how to handle the stress that comes with any new challenge, good or bad. Stress management skills are more effective when used regularly, not only when the pressure on. Knowing how to "unwind" and do it when things are relatively calm can help you overcome the difficult circumstances that may arise.
